Free Break-Even Calculator
This break-even calculator finds the sales volume where a product or business stops losing money, essential before launching a product, signing a lease, or setting targets. Enter fixed costs, selling price and variable cost per unit to get break-even units and revenue.
How it works
Contribution per unit = price − variable cost. Break-even units = fixed costs ÷ contribution. Break-even revenue = units × price. If variable cost meets or exceeds price, contribution is zero or negative and break-even is unreachable at that price.
Example
| Fixed | Price | Variable | Break-even |
|---|---|---|---|
| R20,000 | R250 | R150 | 200 units (R50,000) |
Frequently asked questions
How is break-even calculated?
Divide fixed costs by contribution per unit (price minus variable cost). R20,000 fixed with R100 contribution gives 200 units.
What if variable cost exceeds price?
Every sale loses money, so break-even is impossible, raise the price or cut the variable cost.
