Free Markup Calculator
This markup calculator turns a cost and a target markup into a selling price, the everyday pricing sum for retailers, freelancers and tradespeople. It also shows the equivalent profit margin so quotes stay consistent whichever convention a client uses.
How it works
Price = cost × (1 + markup ÷ 100), and profit = price − cost. The equivalent margin is profit ÷ price × 100. Because margin divides by the larger price figure, a 25% markup always equals a 20% margin.
Example
| Cost | Markup | Price | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|
| R80 | 25% | R100 | 20% |
Frequently asked questions
How is markup calculated?
Multiply cost by one plus the markup rate. R80 cost at 25% markup gives a R100 price.
What markup gives a 20% margin?
25%. Margin and markup are linked: markup = margin ÷ (1 − margin).
Margin vs markup, which should I use?
Use markup when setting prices from cost, margin when reporting profit as a share of sales. The tool shows both.
Can I use this for services?
Yes. Treat your time cost or project cost as the cost figure.
