Free Character Counter
This character counter reports characters with and without spaces, plus words, lines and paragraphs, the limits that meta descriptions, SMS messages, social bios and title tags are actually set in. It is designed for marketers fitting a 155-character meta description, developers checking field limits, and students meeting character-based briefs. Counts update as you type; nothing is uploaded.
How it works
With-spaces length is the raw string length. Without-spaces removes all whitespace characters first. Lines count newline-separated rows; words split on whitespace. The meta-description indicator simply compares the with-spaces count to the commonly cited 150–160 display range, search engines may show more or less, so treat it as guidance.
Example
| Input | With spaces | Without spaces |

Frequently asked questions
How many characters are in my text?
Paste text into the tool; both counts update instantly as you type.
What is the difference between with and without spaces?
With-spaces counts everything including spaces and breaks. Without-spaces strips whitespace first, which some platforms use for limits.
How long should a meta description be?
Google generally displays around 150 to 160 characters. Keep drafts in that range and put the key message first.
Is my text uploaded?
No. All counting happens locally in your browser.
Does it count lines and paragraphs?
Yes. Lines, words and both character counts are reported together for briefs that mix units.
